Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Committee May 20th 2020

___________________________________________________________________

As restrictions are eased we are optimistic of being able to offer more than roll-ups to members. In the meantime we hope a number of you will come along to sample the delights of playing on the freshly spruced green, but please note no visitors/spectators can be admitted to the club under Bowls England/Government guidance.

Having had responses and talking to a majority of the committee it is felt that pairs play is safely possible but not triples yet.I suggest we also make pairs bookings for 2 hours from 10am, 2pm or 6pm, whilst retaining the 1 v 1 play to the 1 hour sessions. We cannot prevent spectators watching (in fact it's nice people are interested), I suggest we ask them to sit on the benches on either the sea or Cafe sides of the green. This is the additional guidance I propose for Pairs play:

It has been great to have 20 playing members since we opened and following the news from Bowls England that there is the opportunity to play Pairs and Triples roll ups your committee have agreed to allow Pairs play from now for those who wish. The committee felt that pairs play is safely possible but not triples yet.

We are making pairs bookings for 2 hour sessions. You can also book to play 1 v 1 for 2 hours, whilst retaining the option of 1 v 1 play at the original 1 hour session times.

Spectators are now allowed to watch (it's nice people are interested), but we must ask them to sit on the benches on either the SEA or CAFE sides of the green.

The original guidance remains unchanged except that if you would like to play a Pairs roll up here is the additional guidance we would ask you to follow to reduce the risk of infection.

Hello Playing Members,

It is wonderful that 26 members have taken the opportunity to play. We would especially like to welcome John Blake back to the club and a warm welcome to new member Ian Hardman.

Neil Patrickson is happy to organize a social/spoon drive type of event to get a few more of the playing members together on Sunday 12th July, start time 2.00pm. It will follow the ‘new’ guidance of PAIRS play, with mats placed and remaining at 2 metres, so only the jacks and pushers will have to be sanitised before each change of game. Players will only need to bring shoes and 4 bowls (plus a pen if you wish to keep a score but the event is purely non-competitive). Each game will be for 6 ends with as many games as time allows between 2.00pm and 4.00pm ish! Pairings will be drawn by one person (with a singles game if numbers are unequal). The event will be totally outside with only the toilet block open as necessary. Therefore, we are totally weather dependent and will only play if it is dry! We could accommodate a maximum of 24 players on the green so first come, first served! As usual we ask that you please book a place on the green through Neil P, anytime up to midday Sunday 12th.

We hope this is the start of other events, if you would like to organize or have suggestions for other ‘get togethers’ please let us know.

We are also happy to announce that, through the kind auspices of our bar lady, Jackie, the clubhouse BAR will be open for ‘waitress’/take away service every FRIDAY at 7.00pm from 10th JULY. Seating (at the moment) will ONLY be outside, with the required social distancing and household groupings of 6. Therefore, we will only be open if it is DRY!

Keep safe and healthy and in touch.

All the best, Neil P, Philip and the committee.

JULY UPDATE NUMBER 2

Hello Playing Members,

The management committee met this week and decided that the present playing situation in the club is fine with no changes to guidance necessary at the moment.

It is wonderful that 30 members have now taken the opportunity to play and we wish to thank another 4 playing members and 4 social members who have paid their subscription.

Neil Patrickson is willing to organize another social/spoon drive type of event to get the playing members together on SUNDAY 26th July, start time 2.00pm. As before, it will follow the ‘new’ guidance of PAIRS play, with mats placed and remaining at 2 metres, so only the jacks and pushers will have to be sanitised before each change of game. Players will only need to bring shoes and 4 bowls. Each game will be for 6 ends with as many games as time allows between 2.00pm and 4.30pm ish! Pairings will be drawn by Neil (with a singles game if numbers are unequal). The event will be totally outside with only the toilet block open as necessary. Therefore, we are totally weather dependent and will only play if it is dry! We could accommodate a maximum of 24 players on the green so first come, first served!

As usual we ask that you please book a place on the green through Neil P, anytime up to midday Sunday 26th.

Neil is also willing to arrange an unofficial club singles/pairs competition on further SUNDAYS in AUGUST/SEPTEMBER. The competition will comprise mini games of 6 ends with everyone playing 4 games, win or lose!, between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. A pairs competition will work best with between 16 and 24 players, pairings drawn on the day. A singles competition can only accommodate 12 players in the 3 hours slot. If you wish to be involved in either or both of these more competitive afternoons please contact Neil a.s.a.p so we can gauge the interest, thankyou.

Just a reminder that, through the kind auspices of our bar lady, Jackie, the clubhouse BAR will be open for ‘waitress’/take away service every FRIDAY from 7.00pm. Seating (at the moment) will ONLY be outside, with the required social distancing and household groupings of 6. Therefore, we will only be open if it is DRY!

Keep safe and healthy and in touch.

All the best, Neil P, Philip and the committee.

News from the Club house

It’s lovely to be able to report on our return to the bowling green at Cromer Marrams Bowls Club. Following the information from the government and Bowls England and extensive consultation among committee members we were able to produce club guidelines to suit members and open the green for singles play on 25th May. A fortnight later we introduced pairs play and we now have 33 members playing regularly and safely. The mats, jacks and pushers have never been so clean!

The work on the green during the winter and spring by our green ‘team’, with professional assistance, has reaped the benefit. It is looking in great ‘nick’ and more importantly playing well, for most members anyway! The committee have recently given the go ahead for more work in the autumn/winter and an addition to the mowing machine to assist the cutting.

As restrictions relaxed, we have been able to hold our usual spoon drives. 20 members enjoyed the first one, played noncompetitively. The most recent was more competitive for 22 members and was a record breaker. Jane C accumulated a score of 34 shots with zero against! Keith has organised these events for many years and has never seen such a scorecard. Congratulations Jane!

The clubhouse received an outside ‘spruce up’ in the spring and the men’s toilet was refurbished in May. There are plans to renew more of the chairs in the clubhouse, but this is on hold until we are able to actually access the building under normal conditions!

Friday evening at the club returned with the opening of the bar. Waitress service only, of course, to members seated outside (weather permitting). The initial hitch was the timing of the sprinklers on the green, soaking anyone near the vicinity of the green edge!!

We can only open, at present, to play as a ‘private’ club so the playing subscription for this year will remain at £30. We are open 7 days a week from 10am to 7pm and with the green planned to be open for play until 27th September there are still lots of opportunities to make the subscription fee a bargain this year. If you are ‘sporty’ and missing the involvement and physical activity come along and give us a try. More details from Neil on 01263 513901.

All 2019 members continue to be considered as social members through to April 2021 so as to preserve voting rights at the AGM.

Details of fixtures, results, history, honours, and club news/photos can be accessed at cromermarramsbowlsclub.com

AUGUST UPDATE

The management committee met this week, as following the easing of restrictions from Government and Bowls England Guidance it was necessary to revisit the club guidance.

The committee are concerned that some members are not adhering to the sanitising guidance but all players now know the guidance and it is felt it is up to the individual to decide their own risk whilst being vigilant in keeping other members safe.

The new Club Guidance is included on this newsletter but the main points are:

Triples play is allowed following the guidance as pairs play.

Alternating direction of play would continue on alternate rinks for roll ups. More rinks could be used if necessary and all rinks for club events with social distancing up to a maximum of 30 members.

It is still preferable to be outside but there are times when using the clubhouse is necessary such as for bowls storage, sheltering in inclement weather and drinking from the bar or kitchen.

The kitchen is CLOSED for members use except for committee sanctioned events.

The changing rooms must remain closed.

The important updated guidance is highlighted in red.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club Committee August 2020

__________________________________________________________________

The First Aid Kit has been moved to the toilet block (from the kitchen).

The committee are asking for volunteers to remove the weeds from the surrounds of the green. They have grown profusely this summer and don’t look good. Just turn up when you have some spare time and attack them!

The committee are most grateful to accept Jane Cozenza’s offer to take on the role of minuting secretary.

The Gents toilet has been renovated with new facilities and are a great improvement despite the drainage not being up to the same standard and causing some problems which have hopefully been resolved.

The green continues to look and play well (in most cases!) and the committee has sanctioned continued professional assistance at the end of the season and another 6 blade cartridge on the mower to assist with winter mowing.

It is wonderful that 33 members have now taken the opportunity to play and we wish to thank another 4 playing members and 4 social members who have paid their subscription. Everyone should get their monies worth this season, despite the lack of competitive games, as we plan to continue playing on the green until Sunday 27th September.

Keith Pantling is willing to organize another spoon drive, to get the playing members together, on SUNDAY 9th August, start time 2.00pm. Players will need to bring shoes and 4 bowls. There will be a contribution to the club of £2 per player, please, with sponsored winnings as last time! Each game will be for 6 ends with as many games as time allows between 2.00pm and 4.30pm ish! Pairings will be drawn by Keith (with a singles game if numbers are unequal). Refreshments will be served on the green as last time during the afternoon. The event will be outside with the toilet block open as necessary. Therefore, we are totally weather dependent and will only play if it is dry! We could accommodate a maximum of 24 players on the green so first come, first served!

As usual we ask that you please book a place on the green through Neil P, anytime up to midday Sunday 9th.

As there were only 5 members interested in any sort of competition we will just continue the season with roll ups and fortnightly spoon drive.

Just a reminder that, through the kind auspices of our bar lady, Jackie, the clubhouse BAR will be open for ‘waitress’/take away service every FRIDAY from 7.00pm.

Keep safe and healthy and in touch.

CROMER MARRAMS BOWLS CLUB - AUGUST UPDATE NUMBER 2

Hello Members,

We hope you are well and coping with the continued ‘strange’ circumstances. If you need a chat or support with anything please get in touch with any committee member, I’m sure we can help.

The management committee met this week with a few changes of personnel. Edna Bunkle, a stalwart of the club and committee for many years, has stepped down. I’m sure we would all wish to thank her for her commitment and valuable contribution to the running of the club. She is still keen to be available to assist us, which is great news. We are delighted that Jane Cosenza has taken on the role of minute secretary and wish her well in the role. Neil Carswell has left the committee but don’t worry, he will continue to work tirelessly on the green and again we wish to thank him for his contribution to the club. Long may it continue! There is now a vacancy on the committee for any interested male member. We look forward to the responses!

Keith Pantling is organizing another spoon drive on SUNDAY 6th September, start time 2.00pm. This event will also double up as the PRESIDENT’S DAY. Philip would like players to be attired in either WHITES, COLOURED CLOTHING OR FANCY DRESS PLUS A HAT. Players will need to bring shoes and 4 bowls. Each game will be for 6 ends with as many games as time allows between 2.00pm and 4.30pm ish! Pairings will be drawn by Keith (with a singles game if numbers are unequal). Homemade refreshments will be served on the green during the afternoon. Therefore, the President would like to ask for a minimum donation of £4, with contributions donated to the local Ambulance Station (or similar). The event will be outside with the toilet block open, as necessary. Therefore, we are totally weather dependent but only rain will put us off this time! We could accommodate a maximum of 24 players on the green so first come, first served!  As usual we ask that you please book a place on the green through Neil P, anytime up to midday Sunday 6th.

Spoon drives will also be played on Sunday 20th and Saturday 26th September with the final day of play available on Sunday 27th September. Booking can be made with Neil P from now.

The procedures for COVID-19 guidance appear to be working with members playing both doubles and triples safely. The green continues to look and play well, and we have had several visitors complimenting the club on the quality of the rinks. The committee have sanctioned the purchase of a 6 blade ‘cutter’ for use on the mower during the winter months.

Bowls England are trying to attract more players with an initiative called ‘Let’s Bowl’. If you have family or friends who would like to try the game, they can have a FREE game in September providing they wear flat, smooth soled shoes. Contact Neil P if interested.

Given that the COVID-19 situation remains the same John Blackburn is comfortable organizing SHORT MAT bowls as usual from October through the winter. A few members have already expressed an interest, but it will only go ahead if a minimum of 8 members play. Although details have yet to be finalized, a maximum of 12-14 members attending each week is envisaged with all COVID-19 bowls guidance in operation. Before making a decision on opening for short mat we need to know how many members would like to attend so please let Neil P know as soon as possible.

A similar situation applies for the club annual AGM. Pending guidance from Bowls England, this will be held on SATURDAY 3rd OCTOBER at 10.00am. We will be limited to 20 members attending in the clubhouse, with social distancing, so members will have to book a place in advance. Please book with Neil P and also forward any AGENDA items and PROPOSALS for club officer positions in the next week, by September 5th.

Just a reminder that, through the kind auspices of our bar lady, Jackie, the clubhouse BAR is open for ‘waitress’/take away service every FRIDAY from 7.00pm.

Keep safe and healthy and in touch.

All the best, Neil P, Philip and the committee.

Latest News

The weather forecast for Saturday afternoon is poor so we have decided to move the 'spoon drive' to SUNDAY 27TH AT 2PM instead, as it is supposed to be drier and slightly less windy.

If you could reply to this and confirm your booking for SUNDAY it will be very much appreciated and save extra phone calls.

Many thanks,  Neil

October Newsletter and AGM report (incorporating news on Short Mat bowls!)

Members, as you know, it was not possible to hold an AGM this year. In fact, recalling April this year, I think we should be pleased how well we coped with Covid-19.

Many thanks to all who paid membership subscription, both playing and social, especially, as at the time, we were unsure as to whether or not we would be able to play.

It was impressive the way our ‘green team’, comprising Neil Carswell, James Phillips, Jackie Purvis and Roger Greef, kept our green in tip top condition in all weathers. How sad that visiting teams and clubs could not play and comment on their work. Thanks to Bob Allard for the many essential tasks he carries out, not forgetting David Mocock who helped sand and cement around the green, hopefully stopping the weeds. We cannot ignore a new role, that of ‘litter picker’, our thanks to Roger O’Leary who picked it up.

Thanks to Neil Patrickson who liaised with Bowls England to provide risk assessment advice which meant members could feel they could play safely. Over 30 members and at least 7 visitors played between 23rd May to 24th September. Singles, doubles and triples but sadly no competitions. Our thanks to Janice Allard, Jackie Purvis and Chrissie Laskey who ensured refreshments were provided for the spoon drives.

As a club we usually rely on visiting teams bar/canteen/raffle monies but despite their absence our finances are healthy at present, mainly because so many of you paid your subscriptions (£1980). Also, John Blackburn’s contribution from ‘short mat’ (£185.70) and Keith Pantling’s ‘spoon drives’ (£164) helped to reduce the inevitable shortfall in raffles, bar takings etc. (£854.20+).

We also qualified for a Government Leisure Grant of £10,000 which has meant that we did not dip into reserves. We still were able to purchase ten bucket chairs (£599.90) and much needed gents’ urinals in the toilet block (£1205). Also, we have been reimbursed by Norfolk Bowls (£348.25) for money we paid in 2019 for intended games in 2020 and a refund from NNDC on the rates (£250.88).

We have enough money to purchase new chairs to replace the ‘tired’ chairs in the clubhouse, this to happen next year.

Thanks to the Officers and also Jane Cosenza, for taking on meeting secretarial duties, and our Committee Members for all their contributions to the smooth running of our club.

Sadly, we cannot see any way we can hold our usual Coffee Morning or Christmas Party but, I think, you will agree we are in a good position for 2021.

Philip Edmonds, President.

This is the President’s report but we are sure all members will endorse that the Club wishes to thank Philip for his skilful, enthusiastic, and good-humoured contributions to the running of Cromer Marrams Bowls Club. He is always there for guidance, assurance etc.

Never leave, Philip, we need you!

If you would like to see a full report of the Club income and expenditure then Treasurer, Jackie Purvis, will be happy to provide details. 01263 514361.

The green has looked and played very well, in most cases, this season. Many thanks to the commitment of the volunteers in the ‘green team’ for their work. Even though the season closed on Sunday 27th September the work didn’t stop and with the assistance of the professionals from Willimotts the upkeep of the green will continue through to next Spring. Then we can start to play all over again!

We held two more socially competitive ‘spoon drives’ in September which were well attended. The first was deemed ‘Presidents Day’ and members enjoyed a game plus homemade refreshments. Thank you, ladies! President Philip was able to donate £100 from the day to the Ambulance Station on Middlebrook Way, Cromer to support them and show our gratitude for their extra efforts.

Unfortunately, the final event on 26th September had to be cancelled, even after moving it on one day, due to the very inclement weather and safety concerns. The high winds had put half the fence on the seaward side of the green onto the cliff path and there were a few loose tiles. Fortunately, nothing major considering the ferocity of the wind on the exposed cliff top! The council have been speedy in replacing the fence as the photos show.

Members will continue to meet on Friday evening, 7-10pm, at the club bar and we are OPENING for SHORT MAT BOWLS and COFFEE! Wednesday 28thOctober, 2.00pm.

The committee agreed that the clubhouse can be used safely with the door closed and extra heating added. The following conditions will apply:

Initially play will be PAIRS with a maximum of 8 members allowed each afternoon.

Tea/coffee will be served during the afternoon (with one member ONLY, each week responsible for the refreshment service from the kitchen).

Play will initially be on the traditional WEDNESDAY afternoon from 2.00pm to 4.00pm(ish!) (but members may also wish to play at another time [to be decided] depending on numbers interested and keenness!).

Cost of the afternoon will be £2.

Members are to bring their own bowls. Bowls are not to be shared.

The wearing of a face covering is optional.

Remember to keep social distancing.

Sanitise your hands at the door.

Under no circumstances should there be any use of changing rooms.

Shared equipment (Jacks, etc.) must be cleaned with anti-bacterial wipes before and after every session.

Members interested in playing must contact Neil Patrickson by Home phone (01263 513901) or Mobile phone/Text (07814060413) or Email (mnpatrickson@gmail.com) to book a place each afternoon. Unfortunately, no one can turn up and play without prior booking as numbers are limited. However, playing time each week will be rationed if numbers are above the limit or an extra session will be added. (If you are going to play it would be useful to know which other time in the week you would prefer).

Get your place booked NOW! First afternoon will be WEDNESDAY 28TH OCTOBER, 2.00PM

Back in August there were 16 members who expressed an interest in the short mat bowls. We hope that now we have the format/details arranged, initially it fulfils a need for them and any other members with a renewed interest. If there is anything else you feel the Club may be able to do to reduce the possible ‘drag’ of the winter months do please talk to a committee member.

We will do our best to keep you informed of Club ‘news’ throughout the close season.

Keep healthy and safe.
